Types of NFL Football Bets

Straight Bets

When you place a straight bet, you’re betting that one team will win by the point spread. For example, if the Cowboys are -6.5 against the Chiefs, the Cowboys will need to win by 7 or more points to cover the spread. If they win by 6 or fewer points (or lose the game), anyone who took the Chiefs would win.

Straight bets generally have odds set at $1.10 to $1.00. So, it would require a bet of $110 to win $100 profit. The $10 difference is the houses take, also called or juice. This is how the sportsbook makes a profit.

Money Line Bets

With a money line bet, you are betting on the team to win. It doesn’t matter how many points a team wins by, they just have to win. In money line bets, the odds can be low in value or very high depending on the probability of the team winning.  Below is an example of Money Line Odds

The negative (-) money line is always the favourite and positive money lines (+) indicates the underdog. Negative money lines show the amount needed to bet in order to win $100. Or a $100 bet on the Bears would turn a $180 profit ($280 total return).

Over/Under

Higher or lower is all you have to think about when betting on the over/under. Online sportsbooks determine a combined number of total points they expect both teams to score. This is one of the easiest ways to bet on NFL football, by just predicting if the total score will be higher or lower.

Parlay Bets

In a parlay bet you are betting on the result of 2 or more games on one betting ticket. This means that each team in your parlay must cover the spread to win your bet. For example, if you pick the Bills to beat the Giants and the Vikings to beat the Dolphins, both of your picks must cover the spread in order to win your ticket. It is also possible to parlay money lines and over/ under bets, as well as multiple sports on one ticket.

Parlay betting odds are much better than winning multiple, individual bets. Most sportsbooks pay 2.6/1 on two team parlay, 6/1 on 3 team parlay, 12/1 on 4 team parlays, and 24/1 on 5 team parlays. A $50, 4 team winning parlay bet would result in a $600 win.

Teasers

Teaser bets are similar to parlay bets in that multiple teams must be selected and all picks must win. Teasers are different in that they allow bettors to add or subtract points to the spread. Of course this results in lower odds, but better chances to win. Teasers can typically move the spread by 6, 6.5 or 7 points, odds are reduced with each 1/2 point move.

In comparison to parlays, a 6 point, 2 game teaser typically pays 10/11 instead of 2.6/1 for a parlay. A three team teaser pays 9/5 versus 6/1 on a parlay. 4 team teasers pay 3/1 versus 12/1 parlays. 5 team teasers pay 9/2 versus 24/1 parlay bets.
